Tuft & Needle Review: Still the Budget Pick in 2026?

Tuft & Needle still undercuts the big bed-in-a-box names, but its lineup has sprawled into overlapping editions and its return policy hides a rule worth knowing before you order.

Sixty-second verdict

  • The T&N Original Mattress II lists at $699 for a Queen, hundreds less than the entry models at Casper or Purple.
  • Every product gets a 100-night trial from the day it arrives, with no minimum sleeping period before you can return it.
  • The catch: Tuft & Needle allows one return or exchange per household in any twelve months, so choose carefully.
  • Ten mattresses now sit on the site, including Legacy, II and 2024 editions of the same names, which makes comparing them harder than it should be.
  • Its mattress warranty counts a three-quarter-inch sag as a defect, a lower bar than the one-inch rule at Casper and Purple.

Scoring Tuft & Needle

65/100

The best value of the big online mattress brands, with a fair trial and warranty, dented by a muddled range and a thin, slow-to-reach support team.

The picks

Pick 01

T&N Original Mattress II $699

The cheapest way into a well-specified all-foam bed from an established brand.

The Original II stacks T&N Adaptive foam, which is infused with gel and graphite and is meant to bounce back faster than memory foam, over a support foam and a dense base, under a cooling cover. Tuft & Needle aims it at back and stomach sleepers, which fits a firmer all-foam bed. The cooling claims are the brand’s own comparison against standard memory foam. Heavier side sleepers may find the shoulders want more cushioning; the Mint adds it for a few hundred dollars more.

Best for
Back and stomach sleepers on a tight budget
Weak spot
Limited cushioning for side sleepers

Pick 02

T&N Mint Mattress II $999

Adds a gel memory foam layer for softer pressure relief.

The Mint II takes the Original’s layers and adds gel memory foam for contouring, which is what side sleepers and couples usually want from an all-foam bed. Tuft & Needle highlights a NapLab award for the Mint line as its best foam mattress, though the site does not make clear which Mint edition won. Even at list price it costs less than most rivals’ entry models. All-foam construction means less bounce and a softer edge than the hybrids, so sitting on the side of the bed will feel unsupported.

Best for
Side sleepers and couples wanting all-foam
Weak spot
Soft edges and little bounce
See it at Tuft & Needle
Pick 03

T&N Mint Hybrid Mattress II $1,199

The Mint’s comfort layers over pocketed coils for more support and airflow.

This is the Mint with individually wrapped coils in place of the base foam, which brings bounce, better airflow and a firmer perimeter. Tuft & Needle says the King has up to a thousand coils. It is the bed we would pick for couples or heavier sleepers who want the T&N feel with better long-term support. Prices climb quickly in this range, though, and at this level you are within reach of a discounted Casper Dream, so compare sale prices before you commit.

Best for
Couples and heavier sleepers
Weak spot
Value edge narrows against rivals’ sales

Pick 04

T&N Essential Hybrid Mattress $599

A coil mattress at a price most brands reserve for foam.

The Essential Hybrid is the simplest bed in the range: a layer of T&N Adaptive foam over individually wrapped coils, under the cooling cover. There is no support foam layer between them, which keeps the price low but leaves less cushioning between you and the springs. It is a sensible pick for a guest room, a child’s first full-size bed or a starter apartment. People with shoulder or hip pressure points should look at the Mint Hybrid instead.

Best for
Guest rooms and first apartments
Weak spot
Thin comfort layer over the coils

Pick 05

Original Foam Pillow $100

A single-block foam pillow with a longer warranty than most rivals offer.

The Original Foam Pillow is a block of the same T&N Adaptive foam used in the mattresses, aimed at hot sleepers and pitched as suitable for back, side and stomach sleepers. Its three-year limited warranty is three times the one year that Casper and Purple give their pillows. A set of two costs less than two singles. A solid foam pillow cannot be adjusted, so if you need a specific loft, the Zip Comfort Pillow lets you remove fill.

Best for
Hot sleepers who like a firm, even pillow
Weak spot
No way to adjust the height

2024 Original Mattress

The 2024 Original lists at $945 for a Queen against $699 for the Original Mattress II, and the site does a poor job of explaining what the extra money buys beyond a different foam stack. It carries a Good Housekeeping award, which counts for something. Until Tuft & Needle makes the difference plain, the cheaper II is the safer bet.

Mattress Topper

A Queen topper lists at $250, and the case for buying one alongside a mattress you can already return is weak. Worse, Tuft & Needle limits each household to one return or exchange in twelve months, so sending back a topper could spend the return you might need for the bed. Settle on the mattress first.

Shipping, returns, support

Each line below was read on Tuft & Needle's own site in October 2026. Policies move; if one has, tell us.

Shipping
Free FedEx Ground shipping in the contiguous US, usually within two to seven business days. White-glove delivery costs $150 and includes setup and removal of your old mattress.
Trial and returns
One hundred nights on every product, starting the day it arrives. Returns run through LiquiDonate, which arranges a donation pickup or a free label, and the policy limits each household to one return or exchange per twelve months.
Warranty
Ten years on mattresses, covering a visible sag deeper than three-quarters of an inch. Foam pillows get three years; sheets, duvets and down-alternative pillows get two. Warranties are not transferable.
Support
Phone at (877) 842-2586 and email at support@tuftandneedle.com. The team works Monday to Thursday, 10am to 7pm Eastern, and Friday until 3pm, with no published weekend hours.
Referral program
No points program. A refer-a-friend scheme pays the referrer a $25 gift card when a new customer buys a mattress costing at least $895.
Amazon orders
Tuft & Needle also sells on Amazon with the same 100-night trial, except the foam pillow at 30 nights, but those orders must be returned through Amazon.

Reader questions

Is there a limit on Tuft & Needle returns?

Yes. The returns page states a limit of one return or exchange per household per twelve months. Within that, the trial is 100 nights for every product from the day it arrives, and opened mattresses are usually donated to a local nonprofit through LiquiDonate rather than shipped back.

What is the difference between the T&N Original II and the 2024 Original?

Both are all-foam beds sold side by side. The Original II uses Adaptive foam over support and base foams, while the 2024 Original adds T&N Flex and Release foams and costs more. The site also lists a Legacy Edition, so read each page’s layer list rather than relying on the name.

Who do I contact if my Tuft & Needle return pickup does not happen?

The returns page sends missed pickups, missing labels and unconfirmed requests to LiquiDonate’s support address, and refund or order-lookup problems to Tuft & Needle’s own support email. A recent Trustpilot reviewer describes being given four different pickup times, so keep every confirmation email.

Our call

Tuft & Needle remains the value play among the big bed-in-a-box brands: the Original II and Mint II are sensibly built and priced well below rivals, and the warranty is fairer than most. Know the one-return-per-household rule, ignore the confusing extra editions, and buy the bed before the accessories. If you can live with weekday-only support, this is where we would spend a modest budget.
