Ring Review: Are Amazon’s Doorbells Still Worth It in 2026?
Ring sells some of the cheapest video doorbells in the country and backs them with a 45-day return window, but its plans, its warranty handling and its privacy record deserve a careful read.

Verdict, fast
- The Wired Doorbell 2K is the value pick, and it is so often discounted that paying its list price would be a mistake.
- Free shipping and free 45-day returns from receipt on Ring.com beat most smart home brands, including Google’s 15 days.
- Without a plan you get live view and alerts but no recorded video history, so treat a subscription as part of the price.
- The written warranty is one year, and recent Trustpilot reviews describe slow, frustrating replacements.
- Ring’s privacy history, including a 2023 federal settlement over staff access to customer videos, is worth weighing before you mount cameras.
Scoring Ring
Cheap, capable hardware and a generous return window, undercut by subscription dependence, a thin warranty and a poor trust record.

What we'd buy

Wired Doorbell 2K $79.99
The cheapest way into Ring, with 2K video and no batteries to charge.
It runs on existing doorbell wiring, records Retinal 2K video with up to 6x zoom and shows head-to-toe framing, according to the product page. If you lack wiring, Ring sells a plug-in adapter. It was marked down sharply on Ring.com when we checked, a pattern across the whole range. Out of the box you get live view and motion alerts; saved clips need a plan. Wiring jobs can be booked through Ring’s paid installation service.
- Best for
- Renters and owners with existing doorbell wiring
- Weak spot
- Recorded video requires a paid plan

Battery Doorbell 2K Plus $179.99
The sensible battery doorbell for homes without wiring, with a quick-release pack.
This model uses Ring’s quick-release battery pack, so you can swap in a spare instead of unscrewing the doorbell to charge it. Video is Retinal 2K with up to 6x zoom and head-to-toe framing, and it comes in several finishes. Ring sells a solar charger and a no-drill mount as add-ons. Battery doorbells draw the most complaints on Trustpilot, chiefly batteries draining faster than expected and solar chargers that rarely keep up.
- Best for
- Homes without doorbell wiring
- Weak spot
- Battery life complaints are common

Battery Doorbell 4K Pro $249.99
Ring’s sharpest battery doorbell, with 4K video and 3D motion detection.
Retinal 4K with up to 10x zoom is the headline, and Ring says it has its fastest-charging battery yet, using the larger Quick Release Ultra pack. It also adds 3D motion detection, which the cheaper models lack. It is the doorbell for porches where you want to read a delivery label. The 4K stream needs a strong upload connection, and Ring recommends at least 15 Mbps for its 4K devices.
- Best for
- Busy streets and deliveries you want to identify
- Weak spot
- Needs fast upload speeds for 4K

Pan-Tilt Indoor Cam 2K $69.99
A cheap indoor camera that turns to follow people and pets, with a real privacy shutter.
The camera pans a full 360 degrees and tilts, and auto tracking follows a detected person or pet during live view and recordings. The feature we like most is physical: a sliding shutter disables both the camera and microphone. It plugs into the wall and can sit on a shelf or mount to a wall or ceiling. Video descriptions and video search need a compatible plan, and those AI features are not offered in Illinois.
- Best for
- Checking on pets and empty rooms
- Weak spot
- Smart search features need a plan

5-Piece Alarm Security Kit Price varies by kit
A DIY alarm starter kit that works with Ring cameras in the same app.
The kit is the base of Ring’s alarm system and lives in the same app as your cameras. Remote arming through Device Modes and cellular backup are listed as plan features, so the box alone is a basic self-monitored system; 24/7 professional monitoring comes with the Ring Pro plan at $19.99 a month. That is fair for monitored security, but it means the real cost is far higher than the box.
- Best for
- Renters and owners wanting a self-installed alarm
- Weak spot
- Professional monitoring costs extra every month

Wired Doorbell 4K Elite
At $499.99 it needs a Power over Ethernet connection with a PoE+ switch or injector, and Ring recommends professional installation, which starts at $129 per device. It delivers the same 4K resolution and 10x zoom as the Battery Doorbell 4K Pro for twice the money. The gate-intercom feature is useful for large properties but not for most front doors.
Virtual Security Guard
This plan costs $99 a month and adds live video monitoring by trained agents on top of the Pro plan. That is real money for a service that only makes sense for properties with recurring trouble. Most households will get more value from the Pro plan’s professional alarm monitoring, or simply from the Multi plan and their own phone.
Ring versus two rivals
Two brands a shopper is likely to be weighing at the same time. Words only; the numbers change too often to print.
| Row | Ring | Google Nest | eufy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Range | Doorbells, indoor and outdoor cameras, alarm kits, chimes and a smart lock | Thermostats, cameras, doorbells, speakers and displays in one app | Cameras, doorbells, robot vacuums and other home gadgets |

Shipping, returns, support

Pass if you are

Still wondering?
Do you need a Ring subscription?
Ring says no: devices work without a plan, giving you live view and motion alerts. But video recording, event history and smart alerts for people, packages and vehicles all need a plan. Ring Solo starts at $4.99 a month for one device, and Multi covers every device at one address for $9.99.
How long is Ring’s return window?
Forty-five days from the date you receive your order, if you bought it on Ring.com, with free return shipping and a full refund. That is longer than most rivals. If you bought from Amazon, Best Buy or another store, you have to follow that retailer’s policy instead.
Do Ring subscribers get a discount on devices?
Yes. Ring.com advertises 10% off select products for customers with a Ring subscription, subject to its terms. In practice the bigger savings come from Ring’s near-constant sales, so compare the sale price against the list price before applying any subscriber discount.
Is Ring safe to use given its privacy record?
Ring has tightened security over the years, but in 2023 it settled Federal Trade Commission charges that employees and contractors had accessed customers’ private videos. Turn on two-step verification, review the app’s Control Center settings, and think carefully about pointing cameras into private spaces.
Our call
Ring is the easiest way to put a camera on your front door for not much money, and its 45-day free return window is the most generous we found in this category. The cost comes later: recorded video needs a plan, the warranty is short, and support reviews are bleak. Buy the Wired Doorbell 2K on sale, add the Multi plan, and keep the box.
