Purple Review: Is the Grid Mattress Worth the Hassle in 2026?
Purple’s squishy polymer grid still feels like nothing else on the market, but the returns small print and a wall of warranty complaints deserve as much attention as the mattress.

Sixty-second verdict
- The Purple Mattress, at $1,599 for a Queen, is the cleanest way to find out whether you like the GelFlex Grid.
- You must sleep on a mattress for 21 nights before starting a return, and Purple deducts transportation charges from the refund.
- Bed frames, headboards and bases cannot be returned at all, which matters if you buy a bundle.
- Trustpilot rates Purple 1.3 out of 5, and the complaints cluster around denied warranty claims and returns that took weeks to collect.
How Purple scored
A distinctive, well-liked sleep surface, undercut by a refund policy that keeps some of your money and a poor public record on warranty claims.

What we'd buy

The Purple Mattress $1,599
The original grid bed, and the most direct way to try the feel.
Two inches of GelFlex Grid sit over three and a half inches of comfort foam and a four-inch base, for a 9.25-inch mattress Purple rates medium-firm. The grid’s columns buckle under shoulders and hips, which side and combination sleepers tend to like. A Queen ships rolled and weighs close to a hundred pounds, so plan for two people. It cannot go on a box spring: Purple wants a solid base or slats under 3.5 inches apart. Some owners on the product page find it firmer than they expected.
- Best for
- Combination sleepers curious about the grid
- Weak spot
- Heavy, and firmer than many expect

PurpleFlex Mattress $1,299
The cheapest grid mattress, and it is on sale more often than not.
PurpleFlex keeps the same two inches of grid and drops the comfort foam, leaving an eight-inch bed with a firm feel that Purple pitches at stomach and back sleepers. When we checked, a Queen was marked down to $999 from its $1,299 list, and the product page showed a 4.4 average from around seven hundred reviews. It is sold only on Purple’s own site, so you cannot try it in a store first. Side sleepers and anyone over average weight will likely want more cushioning underneath.
- Best for
- Stomach sleepers who want the grid for less
- Weak spot
- Thin profile; side sleepers may bottom out

Restore Hybrid Mattress $2,699
Adds pocketed coils and a supportive edge under the grid.
The Restore Hybrid puts two inches of grid and a comfort foam layer over individually wrapped coils, with an edge support system and a medium feel. Coils add bounce, airflow and a firmer perimeter, which couples who sit on the edge of the bed will notice. It is a big step up in price from the Purple Mattress for the same grid thickness; the RestorePlus adds a third inch of grid but costs more again. Purple’s cooling claims for this model are the brand’s own comparisons.
- Best for
- Couples who want bounce and edge support
- Weak spot
- Pricey jump for the same grid depth

Purple Harmony Pillow $229
A latex-core pillow wrapped in grid, offered in three heights.
Harmony wraps a ventilated Talalay latex core in a honeycomb grid layer, and comes in low, medium and tall versions so you can match it to your shoulder width. Purple’s page shows a 4.4 average from over fourteen thousand reviews, the strongest score in its pillow line. The trial is muddled: the product specifications say 30 nights while the page’s FAQ says 100, so confirm in writing before you rely on the longer window. The core is spot-clean only.
- Best for
- Side and back sleepers who know their loft
- Weak spot
- Return window stated two different ways

Purple SoftStretch Sheet Set $249
Stretchy sheets that let a grid mattress move the way it is designed to.
Tight woven sheets can drum over a grid top and dull the feel, which is the case Purple makes for these. They are 67 percent bamboo-derived rayon, 23 percent polyester and 10 percent spandex, with a heavy elastic edge. The standard version fits mattresses up to 15.5 inches; the taller Rejuvenate beds need the Deep Pocket set at a higher price. Returns are 30 days from delivery, and Purple’s policy says you pay the return shipping on bedding.
- Best for
- Owners of a Purple mattress
- Weak spot
- Synthetic blend, and you pay return postage
What we'd pass on
Purple Pillow
The original all-grid pillow lists at $249 and carries a 3.9 average from over sixteen thousand reviews, well below the Harmony. Its own page cannot agree on its weight, listing 11.7 pounds in the specs and 10 in the FAQ, and either figure is heavy for a pillow. Owners mention the height is low for reading. Buy the Harmony instead.
Purple Premium Plus Smart Base
Purple’s returns page says bases and bed frames cannot be returned, refunded or exchanged, so an adjustable base is a final purchase. The bed frames page advertises a ten-year warranty, but the warranty page shows full coverage only for two years, parts only to year five and prorated part costs after that. Buy a base from a store that lets you send it back.
Purple against the field
Two brands a shopper is likely to be weighing at the same time. Words only; the numbers change too often to print.
| Row | Purple | Casper | Tuft & Needle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Range | Ten grid mattresses across three collections, plus grid pillows, stretch sheets and bases | Six adult foam and hybrid mattresses, plus pillows, sheets, frames and a dog bed | Three mattresses, a few pillows, sheets and simple furniture |
| Price position | Mid-market for the entry beds, luxury pricing for the Rejuvenate line | Mid-market to premium, with near-constant sale pricing | The cheapest of the three by a clear margin |
| Returns | Hundred days after a twenty-one night minimum, with transport charges deducted | Free pickup within a hundred nights, but only after thirty nights | Hundred nights on everything, one return per household per year |

Is Purple for you?

- Sleepers who have tried a grid mattress in a store and loved it
- Hot sleepers who dislike the sink of memory foam
- Buyers prepared to keep the law tags and photograph everything
Pass if you are
- Anyone who wants a full refund if the mattress does not work out
- Shoppers buying a frame or base they might want to return
- People who have no store nearby to test the grid first
Still wondering?
Do you get a full refund if you return a Purple mattress?
Not necessarily. Purple’s returns page says the refund is the product price minus any discount, accrued interest and transportation charges, capped at its standard freight charges. The page does not publish the amount, so ask customer care for the exact figure in writing before you start the return.
How long do I have to sleep on a Purple mattress before returning it?
Purple asks you to sleep on it for at least 21 nights before starting a return or exchange, inside a 100-day window that starts on the delivery date. The mattress must be clean and undamaged, with the law tag attached, and you will be asked for photos of both.
Can I put a Purple mattress on a box spring?
No. Purple says its mattresses should not be used with a box spring. It wants a solid base, slats less than 3.5 inches apart, or an adjustable base rated for at least 750 pounds. Using the wrong base can void the warranty, which is one of the reasons owners report claims being refused.
Why do people say Purple denies warranty claims?
The warranty only treats an impression deeper than one inch as a defect, and it is void if the cover was removed, the tags are missing or the base was unsuitable. Trustpilot reviewers describe denials on exactly those grounds. Keep the receipt, the tags and photos of your frame from day one.
Can I buy a Purple mattress with FSA or HSA money?
Purple’s mattress pages say FSA and HSA funds can be used through a third party called Truemed, which assesses eligibility. Whether a mattress qualifies for you depends on your plan and circumstances, so check with your plan administrator before you count on it. This is not tax advice.
Where we land
If you have lain on a Purple and liked it, the Purple Mattress or a discounted PurpleFlex is a fair buy, and the Harmony pillow is the best thing in the accessory line. Just go in expecting to bear some cost if it does not work out: a three-week minimum, deducted freight, no returns on bases and a warranty that is enforced to the letter. Try one in a store before ordering online.
