HelloFresh Review: Is America’s Biggest Meal Kit Still Worth It?
HelloFresh offers the widest weekly menu of the big meal kits and makes skipping easy, but its intro deals, credit-first refunds and five-day cutoff reward subscribers who read the terms.

The short version
- The menu is the draw: more than 100 weekly recipes and market items, with over 21 ways to swap or upgrade proteins and sides.
- You can skip, pause or cancel without a fee, but changes lock at 11:59 p.m. Pacific five days before each delivery.
- After the introductory discount, the subscription renews weekly at the regular, non-promotional rate, so the second month costs noticeably more than the first.
- Complaints must be raised within five days, and HelloFresh decides between a credit and a refund; compensation credits can be withdrawn if you cancel.
- Delivery covers the contiguous US only, excluding Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
Beacon Score
A big, flexible menu and painless skipping, offset by promo-driven pricing, a credit-first complaints process and steady reports of missing items.

The picks

Meat & Veggies Price varies by plan
The broadest preference setting, which HelloFresh promotes as its most popular plan.
Meat & Veggies is less a fixed menu than a default filter: you still see the full weekly menu and can pick anything. That matters, because the recipes run about 30 minutes and lean on familiar formats such as glazed pork chops, stir-fries and grain bowls. Recent Trustpilot reviewers praise the variety but also describe meals that start to taste alike after a few months, and a few report missing proteins. Check each box on arrival and report gaps within five days.
- Best for
- Couples who want variety without dietary limits
- Weak spot
- Some regulars find the recipes repetitive

Quick & Easy Price varies by plan
The recipes built for 20 minutes or less, which is what most weeknight buyers actually want.
HelloFresh markets Quick & Easy as balanced meals ready in 20 minutes or less, against roughly 30 minutes for a standard recipe. The time saving comes from simpler techniques and fewer components, so expect sheet pans and one-pot dishes rather than anything ambitious. It is the setting we would start with if the point of a meal kit is to beat takeout on a tired Tuesday. Prep times assume you move fast; first-timers should add a few minutes.
- Best for
- Weeknight cooks short on time
- Weak spot
- Simple techniques can feel samey

Family Friendly Price varies by plan
Kid-tested recipes, with plans that scale up to six people.
HelloFresh lets you order meals for two to six people, and the Family Friendly menu flags recipes it describes as kid-tested. Portions are pre-measured, which cuts waste for larger households, though bigger boxes mean more packaging, a complaint that shows up in recent reviews. You can add extra meals in busy weeks and skip in quiet ones. Families with allergies should read the allergen section of the terms closely and check every recipe card.
- Best for
- Households of four to six with mild eaters
- Weak spot
- Packaging volume grows with the box

Veggie Price varies by plan
Vegetarian and plant-based recipes, with the option to add protein to veggie dishes.
The Veggie preference surfaces vegetarian and plant-based meals first, and HelloFresh lists adding protein to veggie dishes among its customization options, which is handy in mixed households where one person eats meat. Vegetarian meals avoid the most common complaint we read, missing or unsealed meat. The weak point is starch: one recent reviewer complained about a run of rice and risotto dishes, so pick deliberately rather than accepting defaults.
- Best for
- Vegetarians and mixed-diet couples
- Weak spot
- Can lean heavily on rice and pasta

HelloFresh Market Price varies by item
Add-on lunches, breakfasts, sides and snacks that ride along in your weekly box.
Market is HelloFresh’s add-on shop, pitched as a way to skip the grocery store for quick lunches, breakfasts, sides and snacks. Because it arrives in the same weekly box as your meals, it saves a separate grocery run, which is the main reason to use it. The site does not list Market prices publicly before sign-up, so compare them with your supermarket inside the app before making it a habit, and remember that a skipped week means no Market delivery either.
- Best for
- Topping up a box with lunches
- Weak spot
- Prices hidden until you sign up

Free Breakfast for Life offer
The headline promotion sounds generous, but the fine print says one free breakfast item per box with an active subscription, and the free meals are applied as a discount on your first box. It is a retention hook: the benefit stops the week you stop ordering. Judge HelloFresh on the regular weekly price, not on the breakfast.
Meal Kits for One Person
HelloFresh has a landing page for single cooks, but the same page admits it does not offer a specific meal kit for one. You get two-serving recipes and are told to refrigerate half. That works if you like leftovers; if not, a single-serve prepared-meal service or the grocery store will waste less food and money.
HelloFresh against the field
Two brands a shopper is likely to be weighing at the same time. Words only; the numbers change too often to print.

Still wondering?
How do I cancel HelloFresh without being charged again?
Cancel in account settings under plan settings, or email support with your name and account email, before the cutoff shown on your menu page. The cutoff is 11:59 p.m. Pacific five days before delivery, so a Tuesday delivery locks the previous Thursday night. Miss it and that week’s box ships and is charged, with cancellation applying from the following week.
Does HelloFresh refund missing ingredients?
Sometimes. The terms say you must contact HelloFresh within five days of receiving the item, and it may issue a credit for the ingredient or meal kit, or in some cases a partial or full refund. It can ask for a photo first. Credits come up far more often than refunds in the reviews we read.
Does HelloFresh deliver to Alaska or Hawaii?
No. The terms limit service to the contiguous United States and specifically exclude Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and other US territories. Within the service area, deliveries arrive between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. on your chosen day.
Where we land
HelloFresh is the easiest meal kit to live with week to week: the menu is huge, skipping takes seconds and cancellation is fee-free if you beat the cutoff. The weak spots are money and follow-through. Introductory pricing flatters the first box, complaints are mostly settled in credits that can vanish when you cancel, and missing-item reports are common. Subscribe for the menu, set a cutoff reminder, and check every box the day it lands.
