Hatch Review: Great Nursery Hardware, Shaky App
Hatch turned the baby sound machine into an app-controlled nightlight and now sells sunrise clocks to the parents too. The devices are well made; this month’s app update has owners furious.

The short version
- Hatch Baby at $79.99 is the pick for most nurseries, and its three months of Hatch+ do not auto-renew, which is unusually fair.
- Returns are free with a prepaid label and no restocking fee, but the 30 nights are counted from the ship date, not delivery.
- October App Store reviews are dominated by complaints that a recent update broke alarm editing, routines, and device connections.
- The adult clocks lean harder on the subscription: Restore 3 owners pay $59.99 a year for most of the audio library.
How Hatch scored
Thoughtful hardware and the fairest returns in this category, held back by an app that keeps breaking and a growing reliance on subscriptions.

What we'd buy

Hatch Baby $79.99
A sound machine, nightlight, and toddler sleep clock in one app-controlled unit.
This is Hatch’s redesign of the Rest, built specifically for babies. It adds a big top button for volume and favorite sounds, a soft nightlight for feeds, Time-for-Bed and Time-to-Rise cues, and recorded Tuck-Ins from family. Three months of Hatch+ are included, and the help center says that plan will not auto-renew. It needs 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, with Bluetooth as backup. One October App Store reviewer said dimming the light also lowered the sound and woke the baby.
- Best for
- Newborns through toddlers learning when to stay in bed
- Weak spot
- Leans on an app that is buggy right now

Hatch Go $39.99
Ten sounds, a clip-on ring, and no app or Wi-Fi to fail you.
Hatch Go is the anti-smart option: three buttons, ten sounds including white noise, heartbeat, and ocean, and a rechargeable battery Hatch quotes at up to 15 hours that refills in about two. The carry ring clips to a stroller or diaper bag, and it plays while charging. At 7.8 ounces it fits beside a travel crib. There is no nightlight and no scheduling, so it will not replace a nursery unit, but nothing about it depends on an app update.
- Best for
- Naps on the go, travel, and grandparents’ houses
- Weak spot
- No light, no schedules, and only ten sounds

Hatch Baby + Hatch Go $119.98
The nursery unit and the travel unit together, ten dollars under list.
The bundle was marked down from $129.98 to $119.98 when we checked, so the saving is small but real. It makes sense for families who travel or split nights between homes, because the baby hears the same sounds in both places. You can pick the Hatch Baby color, including Beechwood. The weakness is the same as buying them apart: the Hatch Baby half depends on the app, and exchanges are limited to a color swap on the same product.
- Best for
- Families who split sleep between two places
- Weak spot
- Discount is small, and only color exchanges allowed

Restore 3 $169.99
A phone-free sunrise alarm and sound machine for the parents.
Restore 3 combines a sunrise alarm that shifts from red to orange to white, a dimmable clock, a reading light, and sleep sounds, with most controls on the device itself. You still need the Hatch Sleep app to set it up and register it. The free tier covers basic sounds; the bigger library of more than 2,500 audio pieces costs $5.99 a month or $59.99 a year after a 30-day trial. Several October App Store reviewers said an update stopped them editing their alarm.
- Best for
- Parents who want the phone out of the bedroom
- Weak spot
- Best features sit behind Hatch+

Hatch Sleep Clock $249.99
Adds contactless sleep tracking, with tracking included and no subscription required.
The Sleep Clock does everything Restore 3 does and adds bedside sensors that read movement and breathing patterns to track the sleeper closest to it, which Hatch says keeps a partner’s data out. Hatch calls it 97% accurate; we could not find the study behind that figure on the page. Sleep tracking needs no subscription, while the audio library is still Hatch+. It is the newest device, so there are fewer owner reviews to judge it by.
- Best for
- Adults who want sleep data without a wearable
- Weak spot
- New, pricey, and accuracy claim lacks visible sourcing
Leave these on the shelf
Hatch Baby Beechwood
The Beechwood edition costs $89.99, ten dollars more than the other Hatch Baby colors, for a wooden button described as microbe-resistant and a recycled-plastic body. That is a fine idea, but the return policy excludes Beechwood from color exchanges, so if the finish does not suit your nursery you are returning it rather than swapping. Buy a standard color.
Hatch+ renewal for Hatch Baby
After the included three months, Hatch+ costs $69.99 a year or $6.99 a month. Without it you keep basic sounds and lights, Time-to-Rise cues, Tuck-Ins, and phone playback, which is all most toddlers need. The paid tier adds sleep consultant chat, which Hatch itself says is sleep guidance and not medical advice, plus premium stories. Let it lapse and see if you miss it.

Two brands a shopper is likely to be weighing at the same time. Words only; the numbers change too often to print.

Buying from Hatch
Each line below was read on Hatch's own site in October 2026. Policies move; if one has, tell us.
Buy if, pass if
Buy if you are
- a parent who wants one device to handle white noise, nightlight, and wake-up cues
- comfortable with an app that controls the device from another room
Pass if you are
- frustrated by subscriptions on hardware you already paid for
- relying on a dependable alarm while the current app update problems persist
What people ask about Hatch
Does Hatch Baby work without a subscription?
Yes. Hatch says that without Hatch+ you keep basic lights and sounds, Time-to-Rise and Time-for-Bed cues, recorded Tuck-Ins, and playback from your phone. The three months of Hatch+ included with Hatch Baby do not auto-renew; you opt in at $69.99 a year or $6.99 a month if you want to keep the extras.
Is the 30-night trial counted from delivery?
No. Hatch’s product pages and return policy both count 30 days from the ship date. If a package takes a week to arrive, you have closer to three weeks of nights to decide. Start the return through the online portal, which emails a prepaid label.
Was there a Hatch recall?
Yes, for some power adapters shipped with first-generation Hatch Rest units, sold mainly between 2019 and 2022. Hatch says the adapter housing could come off when unplugged and expose the prongs. The device itself was not affected, second-generation adapters are not included, and Hatch offers a free replacement cord.
Our call
Hatch makes the nursery sound machine most parents end up wanting, and it treats buyers better than its rivals at the return desk: free labels, no fees, and an included subscription that does not quietly renew. The weak link is software. The latest app update has a wave of owners locked out of their alarms and routines. Buy Hatch Baby or Hatch Go with confidence, and wait on the pricier clocks until the app settles.
