BarkBox Review: Is the Monthly Toy Haul Worth It in 2026?
BarkBox still sends themed toys and treats every month with free shipping and a cheerful support team, but the box is now a bag and multi-month plans are harder to leave than they look.

The verdict in 60 seconds
- Plans start at $24 a month for classic BarkBox and $29 for Super Chewer, with shipping included on every subscription.
- Each delivery brings two toys and two bags of treats, and the classic box adds a surprise item on top.
- BARK has switched from boxes to bags to absorb rising costs and tariffs, and says the contents and price stay the same.
- You can switch off auto-renewal any time, but ending a 6- or 12-month plan early still only takes effect at the end of the term.
The Beacon Score
Fun, well-supported and fairly priced for what arrives, but the long commitments and no-returns policy on box contents keep it from scoring higher.

What we'd buy from BarkBox

Super Chewer from $29 per month
The plan that solves the problem BarkBox exists for: dogs who destroy normal toys in minutes.
Two durable, fluff-free toys and two bags of treats each month, in materials from rubber to solid nylon to fabric-covered cores. BARK is refreshingly frank in its FAQ that nothing is indestructible, and it warns that solid nylon can chip teeth on very aggressive chewers, so supervise. Owners on the sales page and on Trustpilot mostly report toys outlasting anything they bought in stores. It costs more than classic BarkBox, and you lose the plush toys some dogs prefer.
- Best for
- Heavy chewers who shred plush toys
- Weak spot
- Nylon toys need supervision; still not indestructible

BarkBox from $24 per month
The classic plush-and-squeaker box, the cheapest way in and the most playful themes.
Two themed toys, two bags of treats and a surprise item every month, sized small, medium or large at the same price. You cannot pick individual toys, but you can steer the assortment in your account by size, durability, allergies and treat-or-toy mix, including a toys-only option for dogs with food sensitivities. The lowest prices come on 6- and 12-month commitments. Recent one-star reviews complain about repeated toys from month to month, so give feedback early.
- Best for
- Gentle players and dogs who love squeakers
- Weak spot
- Plush toys will not survive a determined chewer

12 Month Gift Subscription $294
A full year of classic BarkBox paid up front, which works out to about $24.50 a month.
The prepaid gift version of BarkBox costs $294 for twelve classic boxes, or $360 for Super Chewer or the Combo box. It is the cleanest way to give the service, because the money is paid once and the recipient chooses the size. BARK’s FAQ notes that some older gift codes may not work at checkout, so the recipient may need to contact support to redeem. The 3- and 6-month gifts cost more per month.
- Best for
- Gifting to a dog owner without signing them up
- Weak spot
- Older gift codes sometimes need support to redeem

Bright Dental from $26.25 per month
A toothpaste-and-chew routine that gets brushing done for owners who never manage it.
Bright pairs a grooved dental chew with a toothpaste gel containing sodium hexametaphosphate: you squeeze a line of gel onto the chew and hand it over. The Original kit includes 30 chews and a tube of gel. The chews contain chicken and pork gelatin, so allergy households should use the chicken-free Allergy Friendly kit. It is meant for dogs over six months and five pounds. It supplements, rather than replaces, professional cleanings; ask your vet about your dog’s teeth.
- Best for
- Owners who struggle to brush their dog’s teeth
- Weak spot
- Original chews contain chicken

Howly Jowly Holidays Advent Calendar $54.99
A one-off December buy that gives you the BarkBox experience without a subscription.
Eight holiday-themed toys and 16 treats across eight varieties, opened day by day. For people curious about BarkBox but wary of a plan that renews, this is the cleanest trial. The toys come in one size only, so large dogs and power chewers may get through them quickly, and the items are not sold separately if a favorite gets destroyed. Bundled holiday sets are frequently discounted in December, so watch for a code before paying full price.
- Best for
- A gift or a no-commitment taste of BARK
- Weak spot
- One size, and plush toys only
What we'd pass on
Basilisk Plush XXXL Multi-Part + Enrichment Dog Toy
A $100 plush snake, 44 inches wide, with four toys hidden inside and six squeakers. It will make a great photo. BARK’s own FAQ says it does not replace toys that get shredded, and plush is exactly what most large dogs shred. For the same money you could pay for three or four months of Super Chewer and get toys built to last longer.
BARK All Treats
The all-treats assortment of jerky, biscuits, a collagen chew, soft chews and an iced cookie sounds generous, but the FAQ says its ingredients are fixed and cannot be customized for allergies or dietary restrictions. That makes it a poor fit for exactly the dogs whose owners most need reliable treats, and an iced cookie each month is not something most vets would cheer.
BarkBox versus two rivals
Two brands a shopper is likely to be weighing at the same time. Words only; the numbers change too often to print.
| Row | BarkBox | Bullymake Box | Chewy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Range | Themed plush or durable toys, treats, dental kits and seasonal sets | Tough-chewer toys and treats in a monthly subscription | Every toy brand you can name, bought one at a time |
| Price position | Mid-priced per box, cheapest on long prepaid plans | Similar subscription territory, pitched at power chewers | Pay per item, often cheaper for plain toys |
| Returns | No returns on box items; support adjusts future boxes instead | Subscription items, with problems handled through support | Free returns on most items for a full year |
| Standout | Monthly themes and a support team owners praise | Built specifically for dogs that destroy everything | Choose exactly what you want, when you want it |

Reader questions
How much does BarkBox cost per month?
BARK’s FAQ says classic BarkBox plans start at $24 a month and Super Chewer at $29, with 1-, 6- and 12-month plans and longer commitments priced lower. Shipping is included. Prepaid gift subscriptions run $294 for twelve months of classic BarkBox, or $360 for Super Chewer.
Can I cancel BarkBox before my plan ends?
You can switch off auto-renewal from your account at any time. If you want to end a 6- or 12-month commitment early you must contact the Happy Team, and BARK says the cancellation takes effect at the end of the current term. Monthly plans offer full flexibility.
Why did my BarkBox arrive in a bag?
BARK says it switched from boxes to bags so it could hold prices steady despite rising costs and tariffs. Bags ship lighter and cost less to send. The company says the contents are unchanged, and the CEO posted a note explaining the move.
Can I get a BarkBox without treats for an allergic dog?
Yes. You can customize your subscription in your account to send toys only, or adjust treat types for allergies. The exception is BARK All Treats, whose ingredients are fixed. If your dog has a diagnosed food allergy, check every treat label and ask your vet before introducing new ones.
The bottom line
BarkBox does what it promises: a steady supply of themed toys and treats, free shipping, and a support team that reviewers keep praising. Super Chewer is the plan worth paying for if your dog destroys toys. Be careful with commitments, though. Box items cannot be returned, and leaving a long plan early still runs to the end of the term. Try the advent calendar or a monthly plan before signing up for a year.
