Allbirds Review: Still Worth It in 2026?
The wool-sneaker company that defined a decade of casual footwear has trimmed its range and tightened its return policy, so we went back through the current lineup to see what holds up.

Verdict, fast
- The Tree Runner NZ and Wool Runner NZ remain the reason to shop here, and at $100 to $110 they are priced sensibly for what they are.
- The return window is 30 days from delivery, but pairs must be unworn, and you pay for the return label unless you buy coverage at checkout.
- Free ground shipping only kicks in above $100, which conveniently sits just above the price of a single pair of Tree Runners.
Beacon Score
Comfortable, honest shoes let down by a return policy that has become stingier and a support setup that is thinner than the price suggests.

Worth your money

Tree Runner NZ $100
The everyday Allbirds sneaker, now built on the firmer NZ sole.
The eucalyptus-fiber knit upper is the lightest and most breathable fabric Allbirds makes, which makes this the pair for warm months, airports, and anyone who runs hot. The NZ version uses a more structured sole than the original Tree Runner, and the shape reads less like a slipper. It still stretches with wear, so if you are between sizes, size down rather than up. Colors rotate often; the neutral ones hold value if you ever resell.
- Best for
- Daily wear in warm or mild weather
- Weak spot
- Knit stretches and shows dirt quickly

Wool Runner NZ $110
The original merino sneaker, warmer and more forgiving than the Tree version.
Merino wool breathes and handles odor better than most synthetics, which is why so many owners wear these without socks. The NZ update keeps the soft, sock-like feel but the sole is noticeably firmer than the first-generation Wool Runner, which long-time owners either love or resent. The upper pills with wear, and the wool is not for rain. For fall and winter around town, this is the pair we would pick first.
- Best for
- Cool-weather commuting and travel
- Weak spot
- Pills over time and soaks through in rain

Wool Cruiser $105
A court-style silhouette in the same merino, for people who find the Runner too soft-looking.
The Cruiser is the shoe to buy if you want Allbirds comfort in a shape that passes at a casual office. The flatter profile and cleaner toe box look more like a conventional sneaker, and the wool upper is the same material as the Runner. The trade-off is a thinner-feeling sole that wears faster at the heel for heavy walkers. A canvas version exists at $75 if you want the shape without the wool.
- Best for
- Casual office days and city walking
- Weak spot
- Heel wear shows early on heavy walkers

Dasher NZ $140
The most cushioned shoe in the range, built for walking and light gym use rather than racing.
Allbirds calls the Dasher an active shoe, and that is the right framing. It has more midsole and a snugger heel than the Runners, which makes it the best pick for long walking days, treadmill sessions, and errands on hard floors. Serious runners will want a dedicated running brand. The knit upper is the same eucalyptus blend as the Tree Runner, so the breathability is excellent and the water resistance is nil.
- Best for
- Long walks and casual gym sessions
- Weak spot
- Not a real running shoe at a running-shoe price

Wool Runner NZ Waterproof $150
The one pair that solves the wet-weather problem the rest of the range ignores.
Standard Allbirds uppers soak through in a drizzle, so the Waterproof Runner fills an obvious gap. It uses a treated wool upper and a sealed construction that handles rain and slush without turning the shoe into a boot. At $150 it is the priciest Runner, and the warmer construction means it is a winter shoe, not a year-round one. If you live anywhere with real weather, this is the pair that makes the brand workable.
- Best for
- Rainy commutes and winter city streets
- Weak spot
- Too warm for most of the year

Allbirds Flip Flop
At $50 the flip flop asks you to pay a brand premium for a thin sugarcane-foam sandal that competes with pairs costing half as much. There is nothing wrong with it, but the comfort case that justifies the sneakers does not carry over to a strap and a footbed. Spend the money on socks or put it toward a second pair of Runners.
Golf Dasher
The Golf Dasher is a Dasher with a grippier outsole, sold at $150. Spikeless golf shoes from golf brands run about the same money and are built for wet turf, lateral stability, and a full season of rounds. Unless you already love the Dasher fit and only play a handful of times a year, buy the shoe made by people who think about golf all day.
Side by side
Two brands a shopper is likely to be weighing at the same time. Words only; the numbers change too often to print.

Reader questions
Can you still wear Allbirds for 30 days and return them?
No. The current policy requires pairs to be unworn and unwashed with tags attached, and the 30-day window is counted from delivery. The old try-them-out approach is gone, so test fit indoors on carpet and decide quickly.
Do Allbirds run true to size?
Allbirds sells whole sizes only and tells half-size customers to size up. In practice the knit uppers stretch, so many owners find the Tree models loosen over a few weeks. If you are between sizes and want a snug fit, size down on the Tree Runner and size up on the Wool Runner.
Can Allbirds go in the washing machine?
The brand's long-standing care guidance is to remove the insoles and laces, wash on a cold, gentle cycle, and air dry. Never put them in a dryer. Check the care notes on the specific product page, because the waterproof and leather-alternative models have different instructions.
Is there an Allbirds loyalty program or student discount?
We did not find a loyalty or rewards program on the site. Allbirds does run periodic sales and offers a discount for signing up to its email list, which is the most reliable way to pay less than list price.
Our call
Allbirds still makes the most comfortable plain sneaker you can buy for around $100, and the NZ sole update fixed the mushy feel that put some people off. The company around the shoe is less generous than it used to be: returns now require unworn pairs and a paid label, and support is email-only. Buy the Tree Runner or Wool Runner with eyes open, and skip the extras.
